The Bund

The Bund is the classic image of Shanghai and the city's main attraction. Sweeping along the western side of the Huangpu river, the majestic buildings date back to Shanghai's grandest days. Many banks and financial companies built impressive offices here in the early 20th century when Shanghai was the financial capital of Asia.

The city side of The Bund is packed with classic architecture. Buildings to look out for include, the old Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, the Customs House and its landmark clock, the Bank of China and the Peace Hotel.

Across Zhongshan East Road, the raised promenade protects Shanghai from the Huangpu River waters. It provides good views of Pudong, the river and the grand scale of The Bund. Huangpu River cruises also depart from here.

A stroll down The Bund at any time of day is delightful and lets you take in the variety of Shanghai life. Early morning sees tai chi and ballroom dancing enthusiasts practicing on the promenade. Daytime sees increasing numbers of business people bustling up and down The Bund. Late afternoon and evenings sees couples, families and tourists simply taking in the sunset and one of the best nighttime views of a city anywhere in the world.
