Macao Tower

A sightseeing tower higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris opened in Macao to visitors on the eve of the second anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.

The Macao Tower was unveiled Wednesday by Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Stanley Ho, managing director of the Macao Tourism and Amusement Company (STDM), the owning company.

Soaring 338 meters above the city, the Macao Tower is the 10th highest freestanding tower in the world.

Visitors can take one of the three elevators to reach the Tower Pod at 223 meters above the ground, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the heart of Macao, the Pearl River and even some islands of Hong Kong on a clear day.

The tower also consists of a multi-functional convention center, a rotating restaurant, a theater, an exhibition hall, an outdoor plaza and a garden.

Macao has retained the richness of its diverse and fascinating heritage, which gives the Macao Tower a unique position in attracting leisure and convention business, the authorities noted.

The structure is expected to receive 1.2 million visitors in 2002, giving a boost to the SAR's tourism industry.
