Dr Sun Yat-sens Mausoleum

The Sun Yatsen Mausoleum located at the southern foot of the Purple Mountain in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, is the Mausoleum of the great revolutionary forerunner, Dr. Sun Yatsen. In accordance with his testament, the Kuomintang government buried his remains here on June 1, 1929.

The Sun Yatsen Mausoleum constructed along the mountains is of great momentum with the distant mountains as the front vaulted arch and screen-like green mountain pinnacles as its rear fence. The main structures consist of memorial archways, tomb passage, mausoleum gate, gateway pavilions and coffin chamber. The whole tomb is propped up with 392 pieces of granite steps, which are gradually elevated, leading to the Altar Hall at the end of the steps. The whole structure is in the shape of a "Free Bell". The square in the pattern of a crescent moon in front forms the round are of the bell ceiling and the vaulted dome on top of the coffin chamber of the Mausoleum looks like the pendulum. The ceiling of the Altar Hall is in the shape of vaulted roof. In the center there sits the full size stone-carving statue of Dr. Sun Yatsen, which was carved by Paul Randowsky, a Polish with French nationality in 1930 in Paris. Around the statue in a sitting position are relief sculptures with stories of Dr. Sun Yatsen's revolutionary activities inscribed on it. At the rear of the Altar Hall lies the tomb chamber in ball shape structure. In the middle of the round shape marble pond is an oblong coffin pit in which lies Dr. Sun's engraved statue in lying position in solemnity on the coffin which was carved by a Czech sculptor Gorch.

The total area of the Sun Yatsen Mausoleum is over 45,000 acre, among which the forest habitat area covers 32,000 acre with vicinity of the mausoleum are Concert Platform, Guanghua Pavilion, Waterside Pavilion and other auxiliary buildings.
