Kunming Zoological Garden is situated on the summit of Luofengshan Hill in the northeast of the city of Kunming.
It is a multipurpose garden mainly for exhibiting animals and also for displaying various flowers and plants. The zoo area is divided into many small sections for large animals, small animals, birds, aquatic animals, etc. The flower and plant area is divided into sections of oriental cherry, plum blossom, sweet-scented osmanthus, Chinese rose and lawn. In spring, the park becomes a sea of flowers. The afforested surface accounts for about 77 percent of the garden.
There are more than 150 kinds of animals in the zoo area, totaling more than 1,000 in number. Most of them are rare birds and animals. One can see such Yunnan specialties as Xishuangbanna wild oxen, elephants, Bengalese tigers, leopards, leaf monkey, gibbons, black-tail pythons, lesser pandas, brown-neck shoebills and green peacocks. One can also see rare animals from other parts of China or other countries, such as giant pandas, golden monkeys, Northeast Chinese tigers, red-crowned cranes, Yangtze River alligators, lions, African zebras, turkeys, orangutans, Australia kangaroos, etc.
