Jiuxiang is a state class scenic spot, 90 kilometer from Kunming city or 22 kilometers north from the Stone Forest. Jiuxiang mainly features karst caves, fused with natural landscapes and human sights and national customs and conventions.
Here are nearly 100 large and small karst caves, one of the largest cave groups in China. It is dubbed as a cave museum for its complete range and styles.
The Jiuxiang karst cave group grew in the dolomite of the shallow sea sediment and gray silicon strip in the Dengying group of the Sinian period, about six hundred million years ago. It is, therefore, a very stable karst cave system superimposed by fault, corrosion and etching, according to experts.
Now open to tourists is the Diehongqiao Scenic Area, which was the first of five major scenic areas to open and is the most characteristic and most fantastic spot. It includes the Yin Cui Xia (Shaded Jade Gorge), Bai Xiang Dong (White Elephant Cave), Shen Nu Gong (Goddess Palace), Wo Long Cave (Lying Dragon Cave), Bian Fu Dong (Bat Cave) and Cableway, totaling nearly 6 kilometers in length. It takes about 3 hours to complete the tour.
