Founded in 1960, Suzhou Historical Museum is a regional and comprehensive museum. It is located in the major historical and cultural site under the state protection-the original Mansion of Loyal King Li Xiucheng of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The museum is now storing about tour hundred pieces of Su-style colored drawings for the roof beam and square pillar and nine pieces of murals. In addition, there is the liana personally planted by Wen Zhengming of the Ming Dynasty and the classical drama stage etc.
There is a collection of more than thirty thousand pieces of cultural relics in the museum. Most of them are unearthed artifacts, paintings and calligraphy, porcelains and handicraft articles through the ages. Among them, the fine works such as the artifacts of the national treasure level unearthed from the two pagodas in Suzhou, the paintings and calligraphy of Song and Yuan Dynasties, the ancient chinaware and the handiwork etc are famous both at home and abroad. There is a collection of one hundred thousand volumes of books and documents of ancient times in the museum, which also attracts the attention from various fields.
The exhibition area of the museum is 2,600 square meters. Except the exhibition of the <Ten Thousand Years Development History of Suzhou> and the <Display of the Loyal King's Mansion of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom> all the year round, there are usually the historical relic articles of fine quality with various themes on display in the museum. In order to enhance the foreign intercommunion, the historical relic articles of fine quality in the museum have been taken to Japan and Italy etc for exhibition.
