Xiamen City Public Transport Company has spent more than a million yuan purchasing three 22-seated deluxe buses and one 44-seated deluxe bus to run two tourist routes day and night beginning from September 3, 1998. There are 14 runs in all every day, of which 11 runs go during the day-time round the city along Airport, Railway Station, Quay, and the main attractions within the urban area and big hotels, the other 3 runs go at night along the same route as the day runs but stop at Yundang Lake, Egret Islet, Zhongshan Road, Egret River Street to visit night scenes. The IC card telephones on the tourist buses make it very convenient for citizens and tourists, especially individual travelers touring the Island, to communicate with the outside if necessary.
In July, 1997, Xiamen opened a special tourist bus route numbered 17 from Railway Station via Jinbangshan Park, Xiamen Botanical Garden, South Putuo Temple, Xiamen University, Huli Mountain Fortress and Zengcuo Convent Seaside to Pearl Bay. After that, the tourist bus route numbered 18 was put into operation from Xiamen University, via South Putuo Temple, Xiamen Botanical Garden, Jinbang Park, Railway Station, Fushan International Exhibition City, Torch High Technology Base, Shigushan Overpass, Institute of Tropical Plants and Jimei Trans-sea Bridge. The buses running on these two tourist routes are deluxe large or middle buses with air conditioning.
