A Songjiang District hotel will offer visitors spas from a natural hot spring within two years.
The district tourism authority has completed planning for a luxury five-star hotel and this will be the closest hot springs for downtown Shanghai, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.
The hotel, on the north side of the Sheshan Hill, is part of the Songjiang Tourism Administrative Bureau's efforts to develop the Sheshan National Scenic Area where a hot springs well was discovered in April last year.
The bottom of the hot springs well, the deepest in Songjiang, is more than 2,000 meters underground.
The temperature at the bottom of the well is 61 degrees Celsius, while the surface water is around 46.7 degrees.
The US firm Antoine Predock will help design the hotel, tourism officials said.
Costing 800 million yuan (US$117.65 million), the hotel will cover 29,970 square meters. The 3-story building will include a basement and floor space will extend for 40,000 square meters.
The spring water will be diverted to the 99 rooms, each equipped with an outdoor swimming pool. The rooms will vary in size from 180 to 1,000 square meters.
A fantasy bath house will be built in the hotel.
The project is expected to be completed by 2011.
Also in Songjiang, a giant amusement park - Happy Valley - will open this year. It will be almost as big as 10 Jinjiang Amusement Park, the biggest in Shanghai.
