Construction of a new sightseeing bus center in Xuhui District has begun.
Officials said the main sightseeing bus terminal, which is currently located at Shanghai Stadium, may be moved to the new site, which will be finished in 2010.
The new station is on Caoxi Road, also near Shanghai Stadium, said the center. It is on the site of an old textile market.
The passenger waiting room will be 5,000 square meters, much larger than the 2,000-square-meter waiting room at the current main terminal.
"The station will have fixed places to catch buses to each destination, so it will be easy for tourists to find the right bus," said Xu Zhuoru, an official with the center.
The station will provide information on booking tours and have places to make complaints and get advice, the official said.
"We will have printed information about the destinations around Shanghai," Xu said.
Xu said the station is very likely to become the new main terminal for tourist buses, but the idea is still under discussion.
"I think it's a good idea to move the general station here from the present Shanghai Stadium station," she said. "The new site is quite near to the present one, but the traffic situation will be more convenient."
Xu said another tourist bus station is being considered for Longyang Road in Pudong New Area.
If built, it will serve tourists going to the Expo Garden.
