Around Chengde City there is a kind of peculiar landform. That is formed through long time geological process, which features red rocks named afterwards "Rosy Clouds Landform".
Rosy Clouds Landform in Chengde is rare in the north of China. Compared with rosy Clouds Hill (Danxia Hill) in the north of Guangdong Province, it seems to be not only more peculiar and handsome, but more vigorous and grand. Its main natural landscape includes Qingchui Peak, Hamo Stone (Toad Stone), Luohan (Arhat) Mountain, Sengguan Peak, Tianqiao Mountain, Mountain with Two Pagodas, Jiguan Peak and so on. It is told that Emperor Qianong had ever divided the perfect mountains and springs into ten landscape, moreover wrote poems to be eulogized everywhere:
The scenery in the Imperial Summer Resort is perfect, you can see the following scenery in the east of Fengmo Mountain. The Arhat Mountain is high enough to make everybody see it, Qingchui Peak is very large and tall. Toad Stone lies toward south, in front of Dehuimen is the hot spring. The Jiguan Peak can reach the moon, Buddha's mountain is winding contimously. Fairy is hid in the two pagodas towards the sun, in the cave of Yuanbao Hill the glossy ganoderma is growing.
Toad Stone
About 1 kilometer on the south of Qingchui Peak lies a gigantic stone (About 14 meters high and 20 meters long). It is like a gold toad lying on its stomach on the earth, wanting to skip out of the vault of heaven. Under the Toad Stone there is a grotto which links up the south and north with 1.88 meters high and 8 meters wide and 9 meters deep. In the narrowest place only one person can crawl forward through the grotto
Luohan Mountain (Arhat Mountain)
Luohan Mountain is on the east of Wulie River with the height of 110 meters. It is like an arhat exposing his neck and stomach with two hands on his knees sitting opposite the hill in face of the lake. All parts of his body are well-proportioned and natural. It is said that the arhat is sent by Sakyamuni to clear the monster away and protect the Imperial Summer Resort, and Qingchui Peak and Toad Stone and Mountain with Two Pagodas are all his weapons.
Sengguan Peak (Monk Cap Peak)
Sengguan Peak is on the south of Chengde City like a cap of a monk, thus called Monk Cap Peak. Its relative height is 300 meter, with an elevation of 650 meters. During the morning and dawn, there is fog rising like thin silk among the mountains. In winter it is covered with the snow, which looks very beautiful and splendid. It is said that it is a fine weather forecast and you will know the changing of weather by watching the scenery on the top of the peak.
Banbi Mountain
Banbi Mountain, the road entrance of Beijing-Chengde, lies on the east of Chengde City. It is famous for steep Mountain. There are inscriptions "Banbi Mountain" and "Sacred Place of Civilization". On the mountain Kuixing Tower Scenic Spot was rebuilt.
Shuangta Mountain (Mountain with Two Pagodas)
In the Shuangta Mountain Provincial Forest Park 15 km southwest to urban area, there are two giant stelae standing side by side, each with a brick pagoda on its top, hence the name. Each stele is about 40 meters high with a diameter of around 20 meters. It remains an enigma when they were built, why, and how. No one has climbed them in recent years. Nowadays, there is a ladder to get to the pagoda, so people can see closely the structure and bricks and then try to find out the answer to the riddle. The newly developed scenic spots mainly include Sanxian Guan (Taoist Temple), Qibao Tower, Lingfeng Ancient Courtyard, Cliff Stone Inscription, etc.
