The bridge spans the river from the west end of May First Avenue to Rongwanzhen at the west bank. It was built in September 1972. On its southern side, an attached bridge was built leading to the Orange Isle. The main bridge has 21 arches, covering a distance of 1,250 meters with 18 piers. Its width is 20 meters. A total of RMB 18 million was invested in the construction and about 800,000 people from various circles of life in the city joined voluntarily in the construction work.
Changsha No.2 Xiangjiang Bridge
Located at Xinhe area in the lower reaches of the river 3.5 km of the No.1 Bridge, the bridge starts from Wujialing, via the Engine Factory, running across the river to the Yingpan North road between the Changsha Shipping Factory and Changsha Textile Mill. It is a two-towered single cable bridge, with the main bridge spanning 210 meters, the largest in the country. The bridge is 2,355.94 meters long and 25 meters wide. The navigation course design is of the third class, guaranteeing a free pass for any 3,000-ton ships. It was designed by the Hunan Communication Program and Design Academy and built by the Hunan Highway and Bridge Construction Corporation. The construction began on October 1,1987 and completed on October 18,1990, including the supporting projects of the Yingbei flyover and Wujialing Pingjiao Square. The construction coasted RMB 135 million.
