Gaomin Temple, at the junction of three rivers including the ancient Canal in the southern suburbs of Yangzhou and the Yiyang River, is one of the eight biggest famous temples in Yangzhou of the Qing Dynasty.
The Golden-Hill Temple in Zhenjiang, the Tianning Temple in Changzhou, the Tiantong Temple in Ningbo and the Gaomin Temple are called the four biggest temples in Buddhism, enjoying a high status at home and abroad.
The temple was given the name of Gaomin by the Emperor Kangxi's forefather Xuan Ye in the 42nd year when Kangxi reigned. When Emperors Kangxi and Qianglong visited the south, they all stayed there. At present, it is a key temple under State protection designated by the State Council.
